Flycatcher Series – #2

Verditer flycatcher(Eumyias thalassinus) is named after its distinctive shade of copper-sulphate blue and has a dark patch between the eyes and above the bill base. Dictionary meaning of verditer is ‘A light blue or bluish-green pigment, typically prepared by adding chalk or whiting to a solution of copper nitrate, used in making crayons and used as a watercolor’. Females and sub-adults are lighter blue as compared to adult males.

Slaty-blue Flycatcher, Ficedula tricolor. I am not sure why scientifically the word ‘tricolor’ is attached to this bird as there are lots of birds with three colors and if you see a female one, you will not even see three distinct colors in it. For your reference I am posting a link where you can find a picture of a male slaty-blue flyctacher. But tricolor? you decide.

Both the pictures were taken at Sattal, Uttarakhand – a birding paradise in the month of April. Mid of January to mid of March is the best time to visit Sattal.
